Love of Learning

books

I don’t think I’m a super-awesome homeschool mom. I’m just a mom, who loves her children, who has taken on the challenge of homeschooling and has survived to tell about it. Some days are good. Some days are bad. As the years go by, we seem to stumble a little less and less.

This year God has challenged me to share, organize and encourage two of my very good friends. As I said, nothing special exists in me. God just gives me strength to do what needs to be done daily. To thank Him, I stepped out of my comfort zone and took the time to share with others and somehow I felt like I was the one being blessed.

Nothing I do is unique. I do love the curriculum I have chosen this year. Some of it, I have used throughout our homeschooling and some of it, we are trying for the first time this year. Every child is different and every year is different. The only thing that remains the same is my desire to create a love for learning in my children. They will be learning for the rest of their lives. God has created us to be curious and to want to learn. As a teacher, I can stifle the curiosity or encourage it. In turn, I can have happy, energetic children or crabby, frustrated children. Not everything they learn is fun. But every time they are learning something, they are strengthening their brains. Which will make learning in the future faster and deeper.

This year my goal is to focus on creating a love for learning God’s Word, both in my children and myself. Keith Ferrin has a great blog on this exact topic, 5 Simple Ways to Connect Your With the Bible as School Starts. Personally, I’ve taken it for granted. I grew up in a Christian home and always have had the Word available any time I wanted. It’s a precious gift. I need to be reminded of that and I want to teach my kids that too!

I just LOVE Debra Bell’s Power Tools of Learning! It gives twenty ideas on how to learn and remember things besides memorizing them. This school year, I’m going to use this chart to help my kids study! She also wrote a book called, “The Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling Teens.”  I am just getting started on it, but so far I would recommend it! After I’ve finished it, I’ll review it.

I pray that your school year is off to a great start! Whether you homeschool or your kids go to a traditional school, I encourage you to help your kids love learning. Let them see you read and learn new things. Have them teach you new things that they have learned.

Let me know if you have any ideas for encouraging your kids to love learning.
